
Val Mulkerns was born in Dublin in 1925.
Her novels include The Time Outwork (London, Chatto and Windus, 1951/New York,The Devin-Adair Company, 1952); A Peacock Cry (London, Hodder, 1954); The Summerhouse (London, John Murray, 1984); and Very Like a Whale (Murray, 1986). includes the short story collections Antiquities (London, Deutch, 1978); An Idle Woman (Dublin, Poolebeg, 1980); and A Friend of Don Juan (John Murray, 1988). Her novels include She has been an associate editor of The Bell and was joint winner of the A.I.B. Prize for Literature in 1984.
She has written two children’s books, which have been translated into German and published by Benziger of Zurich. She was married to the late writer Maurice Kennedy, and edited a posthumous collection of his work The Way to Vladivostok (2000).
She lives outside Dublin and is a member of Aosdána.
